Celebrating Community: Adelante Schools' Inaugural Thanksgiving Gobble Gathering

Jordan Habayeb • Nov 21, 2023

Adelante Schools reached a milestone this Thanksgiving season by hosting our first 'Gobble Gathering,' a heartwarming event that brought families and the school community together for a festive and delicious lunch alongside their scholars. With over 170 guests in attendance, the event symbolized the unity and spirit of giving that defines our school and community.

A Feast from Our Scratch Kitchen

We showcased a menu prepared entirely in our new scratch kitchen. This recent initiative marks a significant departure from the norm in schools, as we move away from the usual reheated, frozen meals. At Adelante, we take pride in our commitment to scratch cooking, ensuring that our scholars receive nutritious, homemade meals. This approach is not just about serving better food; it's a cornerstone of our philosophy that links healthy eating with enhanced academic performance and overall well-being.

Our chefs prepared a menu that featured a turkey sub with a unique blend of stuffing and jalapeño cranberry sauce, accompanied by creamy mashed potatoes. This homemade approach not only provided a healthier alternative to traditional school meals but also brought a taste of home to our school's dining table.

A Day of Thanks and Togetherness

As families sat down to enjoy the meal with their scholars, the sense of community was palpable. Gobble Gathering was not just about enjoying a Thanksgiving meal; it was about coming together, sharing stories, and building connections that extend beyond the classroom walls.

We were thrilled to have Zavier Scott and members from the Indianapolis Colts join us, adding an extra layer of excitement to the event. Their presence was a delightful surprise for our scholars and families, making the day even more memorable.

Additionally, we were honored to have the team from the Patachou Foundation with us. Their commitment to addressing food insecurity and providing wholesome meals to children aligns with our school's mission of nurturing both the minds and bodies of our scholars.

While our event celebrated the communal spirit of Thanksgiving, we also recognized the complex layers of this holiday, especially its varied significance to different communities, including Indigenous groups profoundly affected by its historical origins.

Our curriculum is deliberately crafted to provide our scholars with a holistic understanding of Thanksgiving, incorporating the perspectives and histories of Indigenous communities. This educational approach reflects our dedication to creating a learning environment that honors and respects the diverse stories and experiences that shape our collective history. By ensuring our scholars are informed about the full spectrum of context surrounding Thanksgiving, we aim to nurture a culture of empathy and respect for all cultural heritages

Looking Forward

The success of our first Gobble Gathering has set a high bar for future events at Adelante Schools. We are excited to see this become an annual tradition. Our commitment to fostering a tight-knit community and providing exceptional experiences for our scholars and their families remains stronger than ever.

A Message from Mr. Gammons... Hello EDEMS families! As we enter the final month of the 2023-2024 school year, it's incredible to see how time has flown by. Despite being near the end of this academic year, our scholars continue to engage in the daily pursuit of learning. During the first week of May, scholars will complete their ILEARN testing. We extend our gratitude for their unwavering commitment and dedication to attendance and active participation throughout the testing period. Scholars were honored with special lunches and rewards for their dedication to excellence during the assessments. In this month, scholars will partake in extra celebrations linked to ILEARN. A select group of scholars will experience an in-house visit with Sub Zero Ice Cream and/or enjoy a movie screening at the nearby AMC theater. Permission slips will be sent home soon! Additionally, as part of the ILEARN testing process, preliminary results will be communicated to the school in May. There will be a designated period where families and schools can request a rescore for scholars who are on the verge of passing. Mr. Rooney will be making personal contact with families who fall under this category within the initial weeks of May. Families can anticipate receiving their scholars' final scores during the summer. This month's newsletter is packed with details about the numerous events happening in May. Please thoroughly peruse it to stay updated on all the upcoming activities. We look forward to having you join us at one of our events. Onward, Mr. Gammons
